Coco Gauff, the 20-year-old tennis sensation, has been selected as the female flagbearer for Team USA at the Paris Olympics, joining NBA legend LeBron James as the male flagbearer. This historic honor marks the first time a tennis player has been chosen to carry the U.S. flag during an Olympic opening ceremony.

Gauff’s impressive career has already seen her win seven singles and nine doubles titles, including the U.S. Open championship. Despite making her professional tennis debut at just 15 years old in 2019, she has quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the tennis world. As she prepares to make her Olympic debut in Paris, Gauff expressed her pride and humility at being chosen to carry the American flag.

“I’m truly humbled to have been selected by my fellow U.S. Olympians to carry the flag alongside LeBron James,” Gauff said in a statement. “It’s an incredible honor to represent my country and lead my teammates onto the biggest stage in sports.”

Gauff and James were both chosen through a vote among U.S. Olympians, a testament to their dedication and passion for their respective sports. Stephen Curry, a fellow NBA superstar, nominated James for the honor.

Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, praised Gauff’s selection, saying, “To be nominated by your teammates for this honor is a reflection of the respect and admiration they have for Coco’s approach to her sport and her role as a member of Team USA.”

Gauff has previously spoken about the importance of competing in the Olympics, comparing it to the prestige of the Grand Slam tournaments. “For me, the Olympics is a top priority,” she said. “I want to do well and try to get a medal.”
