Minnesota Governor Tim Walz found himself at the center of ridicule on social media after a now-deleted post on X featured him struggling with a basic football term. The governor, a self-proclaimed football enthusiast, was seen playing a sports video game with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on a livestream.
In the deleted post, Walz boasted, “I can call an audible on a play,” while also praising Ocasio-Cortez for her gaming skills, saying, “You can run a mean pick 6.” However, his attempt to connect with younger voters through the video game fell flat after an embarrassing display of football ignorance.
The Twitter account of former President Donald Trump’s campaign pounced on the governor’s mistake, mocking his lack of football knowledge. “You’d think a self-proclaimed football coach would be aware that you don’t run a pick 6!” the post read.
At a campaign rally in Wausau, Wisconsin, Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. J.D. Vance chimed in, questioning Governor Walz’s football credentials. “You don’t run a pick-six, you run the West Coast offense or the spread offense,” Vance told the audience, poking fun at the governor’s supposed football expertise.
Other social media users jumped into the fray, with journalist Mark Hemingway quipping, “I’m not sure Kamala ever worked at McDonald’s, but now I’m unsure if Walz ever coached football.” OutKick journalist David Hookstead also weighed in, calling the governor’s tweet “cringe, embarrassing, and stupid.”
