LeBron James, the renowned NBA star, has been selected as the male flagbearer for the United States team during the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris, marking the first time a men’s basketball player has received this honor.

“I’m incredibly humbled to represent the United States on this global stage, particularly at a moment when we can come together as a world,” James said, visibly moved.

This is James’ fourth Olympics, having previously participated in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 men’s Olympic basketball teams, earning bronze and two gold medals in the process.

“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything not only to me, but to my family, the children in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and countless others across the country with big aspirations,” James said, reflecting on the significance of this honor.

According to James, sports have the power to unite people, and he feels privileged to be a part of this momentous occasion.

The Associated Press reported that James was nominated by fellow Olympic basketball player and Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry, who is participating in his first Olympics despite being a four-time NBA champion and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player.

“We recognize the magnitude of this honor, and LeBron’s entire career, both on and off the court, speaks for itself as to why he’s worthy of this distinction,” Curry said in a video nominating James.

“Throughout his career, LeBron has consistently embodied excellence on and off the court, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to service and community uplift. His work speaks for itself.”

The female flagbearer for the US Olympic team will be announced on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
