X Aims to ‘Return Very Soon’ to Brazil as Company Works to Resolve Dispute

In a significant shift, X appears to be reversing its stance on complying with the conditions set by the Brazilian Supreme Court, which would allow the platform to resume operations in the country. According to a recent court filing, X’s lawyers have confirmed that the company has appointed a legal representative in Brazil, Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao, as required by Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Additionally, X has reportedly removed accounts deemed a threat to democracy and paid the outstanding fines.

However, the Brazilian Supreme Court has indicated that X’s submission is incomplete, citing the lack of necessary paperwork to formalize the appointment of its legal representative. The company has been given a five-day deadline to rectify this omission. X’s efforts to restore service in Brazil have been ongoing since it was blocked in late August. Although the platform briefly became accessible earlier this week through Cloudflare’s DNS, X attributed this to an “inadvertent and temporary” technical issue.

The company has been working to resolve the issue with the Brazilian government, with a spokesperson stating that X aims to “return very soon for the people of Brazil.” The stakes are high, with Brazil imposing daily fines of nearly $1 million on X and Starlink for non-compliance. Furthermore, users in Brazil risk being fined approximately $8,900 if caught using a VPN to access X. X’s latest move represents a step towards resolving the dispute and potentially re-establishing a legitimate presence in Brazil.
