Iconic boxer “Iron” Mike Tyson will need to delay his comeback to the ring, marking his first official fight since 2005.
Tyson and social media influencer/boxer Jake Paul announced on June 7 that they will postpone their match to a new date after Tyson fell ill during a flight. The fight was initially scheduled for July 20 in Arlington, Texas.
The 57-year-old Tyson experienced nausea and dizziness due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing on a flight on May 26. First responders attended to him upon landing.
“In a follow-up consultation with medical professionals regarding his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation for Mike Tyson is to engage in minimal to light training over the next few weeks before returning to full training without limitations,” stated the fight’s promoters.
The boxing match between Tyson and Paul has faced criticism due to the 30-year age difference—the largest for a professional boxing fight. Tyson will turn 58 on June 30, while Paul is 27 years old.
“My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I will return to my full training schedule soon,” Tyson mentioned in the statement. “Jake Paul, while this delay may have bought you some time, you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
Tyson’s last professional bout was against Kevin McBride in June 2005 at the now-called Capital One Arena, previously known as the MCI Center, in Washington, D.C. Tyson lost that fight and retired with a record of 50-6. He managed to win only five of his last 12 career fights, with five losses and two no-contests, after starting his career 45-1.
Recently, Tyson faced Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition match, resulting in a draw in November 2020.
“I fully support postponing the event to ensure Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night,” Paul said in a statement. “My fans know that I want to face Iron Mike at his best, but make no mistake—when he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my victory with a sensational finish. Paul vs. Tyson will be a historic event, and I promise to bring my best for this once-in-a-lifetime matchup.”
Jake Paul initially gained fame as a social media star alongside his brother Logan, who boxed Floyd Mayweather Jr. in an exhibition match. Jake won his first six career fights, all against non-boxers, some involved in other combat sports, before losing to Tommy Fury. Subsequently, he defeated UFC fighter Nate Diaz and lesser-known boxers Ryan Bourland and Andre August.
Tyson and Jake Paul’s fight will be live-streamed on Netflix, marking a first for the platform.
