I want to emphasize this point as many times as necessary: Every bedroom should have a supply of lube! It’s essential for a smooth and enjoyable experience, whether you’re by yourself or with a partner. Using lubricant can prevent chafing and micro-tears on sensitive areas, even if you don’t think you need it.
We have tested various types of lubes, including silicone, oil, and water-based options, to bring you the best recommendations. Make sure to also check out our guides on the Best Sex Toys and Best Vibrators for more WIRED-tested products.
Updated in April 2024, we have added Gun Oil Silicone Lube and Uberlube Silicone Lube to our list of recommended products.

When it comes to lubes, there are three main types to consider: water-based, silicone-based, and natural oil-based. Water-based lubes are the most common and affordable, providing a high degree of slickness without leaving a sticky residue. Silicone lubes offer longer-lasting lubrication but may degrade silicone toys over time. Natural oil-based lubes, like those made from coconut or avocado oil, are a newer option that play nicely with silicone toys and have a pleasant scent, but may not provide as much lubrication as silicone-based options.
