A post shared on X this morning, now with nearly 15 million views, featured Katy Perry in a stunning dress adorned with three-dimensional floral designs that transitioned into realistic-looking moss at the hem. However, the image was not real, as indicated by a Community Note accompanying the post.
Shortly after the first photo of Katy Perry at the Met Gala was circulated, another image emerged, showing her in a bronze corset and floral skirt in the style of Xena. Despite the outfits being captivating, they were deepfake creations, as Katy Perry did not attend the event. Nevertheless, these images went viral on X, even earning likes from the pop star herself.
Katy Perry was not the only celebrity targeted by Met Gala deepfakes. Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Lady Gaga also became subjects of fake photos, despite their absence at the event.
The rise of generative artificial intelligence has made it easy to create and share various images, even on occasions like the Met Gala, where fans could envision their favorite stars in custom outfits.
