In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Luna spoke about her proposed No Toxic Chemicals in Cosmetics Act, highlighting the risks associated with parabens and corporate practices that prioritize cost over consumer safety.
Luna believes that big corporations are prioritizing profits over people’s health, leading to a higher rate of cancer, infertility, and autism among young people. Parabens, which extend the shelf life of cosmetics, have been linked to disrupting hormonal balance and contributing to health problems. The congresswoman is concerned that corporations are neglecting consumer safety in favor of cost-cutting measures.
The proposed bill aims to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to impose stricter regulations on sunscreen and cosmetics containing parabens. The legislation targets esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid, requiring products that pose risks to consumers to undergo thorough testing before reaching the market.
Luna acknowledges that some may question why she is focusing on this issue, but argues that it affects all Americans, particularly young women and men. Parabens are commonly found in sunscreen products, and the No Toxic Chemicals in Cosmetics Act includes a provision ensuring that any drug containing ingredients meant to absorb solar radiation falls under the regulation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
The bill has been introduced to the House and referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for review.
