A source close to Revel has stated that the company is more concerned about the cultural impact of the recent Tesla layoffs rather than the material effects. Despite the pessimism surrounding electric vehicles (EVs) in the market, New York City officials are confident that someone will step in to fill the charging gap left by Tesla. City programs ensure that any provider operating in NYC will have a reliable customer base, making it a great opportunity for another provider to take over a lease, especially if the site is power-ready.

In Maspeth, there has been interest from several charging companies in leasing the land originally intended for Tesla Superchargers. The Tesla Supercharger network has been highlighted as a positive aspect of the company, amidst challenges from Chinese car companies and legacy automakers, as well as concerns about the electric vehicle market and falling revenues.

Tesla’s charging team recently convinced the entire US auto industry to use its plug standard, which led to the development of a reliable and well-maintained public charging network. Tesla’s expansion plans for its charging network are in progress as other automakers adopt the Tesla plug. The company has handed over the plug standard to the Society of Automotive Engineers for further development.

While Tesla’s sudden change in direction regarding charging infrastructure may impact short-term projects, industry experts believe it will not affect the long-term electric transition. Competitors see this move as an opportunity, with some companies like EVgo planning to incorporate Tesla plugs onto their chargers to serve a larger market of electric vehicles.
