New Android Update: Theft Detection Lock Alerts You When Your Phone is Stolen

0:00

Google’s latest feature, Theft Detection Lock for Android phones, uses AI technology to detect when your phone has been stolen. The phone’s screen will automatically lock if it senses any sudden changes in positioning or motion that indicate a theft.

To train the algorithm, Google’s research team studied common theft scenarios and simulated snatching events to collect data. Thieves often try to open the camera app or disconnect the phone from the network to prevent remote locking. Google’s new Offline Device Lock feature can lock the device when it’s offline for an extended period, deterring thieves.

In addition to theft detection, Google has added four data protection features to secure your information. These features include preventing the phone from being set up after a factory reset without login details, an option for storing sensitive apps with extra PIN or biometric authentication, and additional authentication controls for securing Google account settings.

These security measures are similar to Apple’s Stolen Device Protection system in iOS 17.3 but go further with theft motion detection. The goal is to make it harder for criminals to abuse stolen devices and deter theft.

If a phone is stolen, Android already allows for remote locking and wiping, but Google has introduced a new Remote Lock feature for added security. This feature allows users to lock their phone using just a phone number, giving them time to secure their data and take further action.
