Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) defended President Joe Biden’s decision to limit certain weapons shipments to Israel, stating that the U.S. is not obligated to provide unlimited military support to allies. In response to Senator John Fetterman’s (D-PA) criticism of Biden’s threats to Israel regarding an operation in Rafah, Murphy emphasized the need for a strategic partnership with allies. He expressed concern about the impact of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas on global terrorism and emphasized the importance of eliminating Hamas as a threat to Israel.

Murphy also called for Israel to make a stronger commitment to a future Palestinian state, which he believes is crucial for the survival of the Jewish State in the Middle East. While Biden faced bipartisan criticism for his decision, some of his top allies in his administration and the Senate supported the move. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) even suggested that Israel should not receive any U.S. military aid.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has been ongoing for over seven months, starting with terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israeli civilians in October 2023.
