According to a recent CNN poll, a majority of Americans believe that former President Donald Trump will not receive a fair criminal trial in Manhattan. The poll revealed that only 12 percent of the people in Manhattan voted for Trump, indicating a lack of support for him in the area.
The poll also found that only 44 percent have confidence in the jury selected for the case to reach a fair verdict, while 56 percent are skeptical of a fair outcome. Trump himself has called the trial a “witch hunt” and suggested that it is coordinated with Washington.
Interestingly, the poll showed that only 13 percent of respondents believe Trump is being treated the same as other criminal defendants, with 34 percent feeling he is being treated more harshly and another 34 percent feeling he is being treated more leniently. The increasing number of voters see the trial as irrelevant to Trump’s fitness for the presidency.
Despite the ongoing trial and potential convictions, about three-quarters of Trump’s supporters are committed to standing by him. The political impact of a possible conviction remains uncertain, but certain characteristics of Trump’s supporters indicate who may reconsider their support based on the outcome.
The CNN poll surveyed 1,212 adults from April 18-23 and has a margin of error of 3.4 points.
