Morehouse College President David A. Thomas has warned that he is prepared to stop the graduation ceremony if protesters disrupt President Joe Biden’s commencement address. He stated that he would rather halt the ceremony than involve law enforcement.

Thomas emphasized that disruptive behavior preventing the ceremony from proceeding smoothly will not be tolerated. He also mentioned that hate speech will not be permitted during the event.

During a press briefing, White House Office of Public Engagement Director Steve Benjamin reiterated Biden’s support for free speech and the right to peaceful protest. He assured that as long as protests do not disrupt the ceremony, they will be considered a success.

Thomas expressed openness to silent protests and allowing individuals to turn their chairs to Biden’s back while speaking. He emphasized the importance of upholding values and humanity in all situations.

President Barack Obama previously spoke at Morehouse College’s commencement in 2013, and Biden is set to receive an honorary degree for his years of public service. Thomas praised Biden for his decades of service in the Senate and as vice president.

The White House did not comment on Thomas’s statements in response to the Truth Voices’s request. Thomas emphasized the importance of higher education institutions maintaining spaces for open dialogue and free speech.
