A crushing new poll has revealed that a vast majority of New Yorkers have lost faith in Mayor Eric Adams, with nearly 7 in 10 calling for his resignation in the wake of a federal bribery indictment.
The Marist New York City Poll found that 69% of respondents believe Adams should step down, including a staggering 71% of Democrats. Furthermore, 81% of city residents think he should not seek public office again, a clear indication of the damage the scandal has inflicted on his reputation.
The poll also showed that 63% of New Yorkers believe Governor Kathy Hochul should intervene and force Adams to resign if he refuses to do so voluntarily. However, Adams has vowed to fight the charges, making it unlikely he will relinquish his post without a fight.
The survey painted a bleak picture of Adams’ standing among city residents, with 65% believing he engaged in illegal behavior, 24% viewing his actions as unethical but not illegal, and just 8% seeing him as innocent. The numbers are even more dire among Democrats, with 68% convinced he broke the law.
Adams’ job approval ratings have plummeted, with only 26% of residents expressing support for his performance, down from 37% in November. Conversely, 74% disapprove of the job he’s doing, a stark reversal of fortunes for the embattled mayor.
Dr. Lee Miringoff, Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, described the results as “devastating” for Adams, noting that the public’s perception of his guilt and desire for his resignation have reached unprecedented levels.
