A 26-year-old man from Irondale, Alabama, with ties to Antifa was arrested for detonating an explosive device outside the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert faces charges of malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device, according to a Department of Justice press release. Surveillance footage linked Calvert to activist stickers found near the Alabama Statehouse, with messages such as “SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ANTIFA” and “ANTI-FASCISM IS COMMUNITY SELF-DEFENSE.”
In videos on his TikTok page, Calvert displayed stickers similar to those found at the scene of the bombing. Court documents revealed statements made by Calvert expressing violent impulses against the government. Following the detonation of the device in February, law enforcement agencies launched an investigation leading to Calvert’s arrest.
The device was identified as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) containing various components designed to cause harm. If convicted, Calvert could face up to 20 years in prison for malicious use of explosives and a fine of $10,000 for possession of an unregistered destructive device. The cooperation between federal, state, and local authorities was crucial in apprehending Calvert.
