According to a recent Pew Research poll, a growing number of Americans believe that the United States is providing too much aid to Ukraine. Speaker Mike Johnson led efforts to allocate $60 billion in aid to the embattled nation in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The poll revealed that 31 percent of Americans think the US is providing excessive aid to Ukraine, while 25 percent believe the amount is appropriate, and 24 percent feel that it is insufficient. This marks a significant shift from previous polls conducted in March 2022, where only 7 percent thought aid was excessive.
Specifically, 49 percent of Republicans now believe that the US is giving too much aid to Ukraine. Additionally, opinions on aid vary by age, with younger Republicans and Democrats more likely to believe that the aid is excessive.
Despite criticism, Speaker Johnson defended his decision to provide aid to Ukraine, describing himself as a “wartime Speaker” focused on doing what he believes is right. He emphasized the importance of historical judgment and the critical nature of the current situation.
Before becoming Speaker, Johnson received criticism from a group supported by Bill Kristol for votes against Ukraine aid. However, he has since shifted his stance and advocated for aid to be provided to Ukraine and other countries.
