Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) stated on Friday during MSNBC’s “Katy Tur Reports” that Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have acted “rogue” in violating federal laws.
Tur remarked, “While Justice Alito has not commented on the Appeal to Heaven flag, it was his wife who flew the upside-down flag at their Virginia home amidst a dispute with their neighbor. Joining us now is Rhode Island Senator and Judiciary Committee member Sheldon Whitehouse, who, together with Dick Durbin, sent a letter to Chief Justice Roberts requesting a meeting to ensure Justice Alito recuses himself from January 6th cases. Thank you for joining us. Do you anticipate that Chief Justice Roberts will meet with you?”
He added, “I think he’s in a very difficult position, and I believe he has given Justice Thomas and Justice Alito far too much leeway, allowing them to go completely rogue. Clearly, what he has been doing is ineffective. That’s one reason we want to meet—to discuss what the Judicial Conference and its chair, Chief Justice Roberts, can do about justices who have blatantly violated Supreme Court rules, ethics rules applicable to all federal judges, and even federal laws. This conduct is unacceptable. You wouldn’t tolerate it in any other agency, let alone the United States Supreme Court.”
