Former judge Clifton Newman, who presided over the Alex Murdaugh case, expressed feeling judged during his time overseeing the six-week double murder trial. Newman spoke at Coastal Carolina University’s commencement ceremony as the keynote speaker, focusing on his experience with the Murdaugh case. He mentioned feeling like the burden of representing the justice system in South Carolina was placed on him.
Newman received an honorary degree of Doctor of Public Service during the ceremony. He sentenced Alex Murdaugh to two consecutive life in prison terms for the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul. Newman referred to the Murdaugh family’s legal lineage, calling Alex “legal royalty” in South Carolina despite his status as a murder defendant.
Newman, a judge for over two decades, shared his journey from a small town upbringing to national prominence. He emphasized the importance of being prepared to face significant moments, citing his handling of the Murdaugh trial as an example. Despite showing compassion towards Murdaugh during the sentencing, Newman acknowledged the lack of winners in the case and the pain felt by all involved.
Following his recusal from the case and subsequent retirement due to a state mandate at age 72, Newman continues to work as an active retired judge and offers arbitration and mediation services. He has also been invited to speak at other graduation ceremonies, maintaining a presence in the legal community.
