Japanese crypto exchange DMM Bitcoin announced on Friday that it suffered a hack, leading to the theft of 4,502.9 bitcoin, equivalent to approximately $305 million.

As reported by crypto security firm Elliptic, this incident ranks as the eighth largest crypto theft ever recorded.

DMM Bitcoin revealed that it identified “an unauthorized leak of Bitcoin (BTC) from our wallet” on Friday. The exchange stated it is actively investigating the breach and has implemented measures to prevent further thefts. Additionally, they mentioned that restrictions have been placed on some services to enhance security, as per a machine translation of the company’s official blog post (written in Japanese).

The company assured customers that their Bitcoin deposits “will be fully guaranteed as we will procure the equivalent amount of BTC that was leaked with support from our group companies.”

DMM Bitcoin has not yet responded to a request for comments.

According to De.Fi, a web3 security firm that monitors crypto thefts and scams, hackers stole approximately $2 billion in crypto via numerous cyberattacks and thefts last year. Although this is a substantial amount, it was the lowest annual total since 2020.
