The German navy has downplayed the significance of playing the iconic Imperial March from the “Star Wars” franchise on one of its warships as it sailed down the River Thames in London. The incident, which was captured on video by a bystander, sparked widespread interest on social media and raised eyebrows across Europe.
According to the German navy, the warship, Braunschweig, was in the area for training and made a routine stop in London for supplies. The navy stated that the commander of the ship has the freedom to choose the music played on board, and the selection of the Imperial March was not intended to convey any deeper message.
However, it appears that the commander has a fondness for music from the “Star Wars” franchise, as well as other notable soundtracks. On arrival in London, the warship played “London Calling” by The Clash, a song that references the city’s history and has become a classic of British rock music.
The Braunschweig, which is part of Germany’s newest class of ocean-going corvettes, is named after a city in the country’s Lower Saxony region. During its visit to London, the warship was accompanied by a tugboat and sailors were seen standing on deck as it departed.
The German Embassy in London revealed that the warship’s commander is a fan of “Star Wars” and the music of John Williams, and has a tradition of playing different Williams scores when visiting foreign ports. However, it is not known whether any Star Wars characters, such as Anakin Skywalker, were on board during the visit.
