The Netherlands’ contestant in the Eurovision Song Contest was unexpectedly disqualified from the competition just hours before Saturday’s final in Malmo, Sweden. The disqualification was due to a backstage incident under investigation by Swedish police involving a female member of the production crew. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTOS expressed shock at the decision and called the disqualification disproportionate.

Despite the event’s theme of “united by music,” this year’s Eurovision contest has been marked by controversy. Large pro-Palestinian demonstrations have taken place, calling for Israel to be excluded due to its actions in the Gaza Strip. The competition has attracted both adoration and criticism for its campy and kitschy nature.

The favorite acts in this year’s contest include Swiss singer Nemo and Croatia’s Baby Lasagna. The event, which draws an estimated 180 million viewers worldwide, features a variety of performances ranging from emotional to eccentric. Organizers have enforced a ban on openly political statements, prompting Israel to change the title of its song in response to controversy.

Amid the tensions and protests surrounding the event, former Eurovision champion Loreen emphasized the importance of maintaining a sense of love and unity. Despite the challenges and criticisms facing the contestants, she urged people not to lose sight of the community of love that Eurovision represents.
