Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., co-founder and co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, sharply criticized the performance of moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis during a recent presidential debate. Appearing on Newsmax TV’s “The Record,” Fahrenkopf, who also served as Chair of the RNC, described their handling of the debate as “the worst performance” he has witnessed in his 33 years of experience with presidential debates.
Fahrenkopf emphasized that moderators should act as facilitators, not participants, in the debate. He noted that their role is to allow the candidates to engage with each other, rather than inserting themselves into the conversation. However, he felt that Muir and Davis failed to adhere to this principle, instead becoming overly involved in the debate. Fahrenkopf specifically accused the moderators of treating 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump unfairly, while going out of their way to assist 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. He expressed shock at the moderators’ behavior, which he believed was a clear departure from the standard protocol for presidential debates. Fahrenkopf’s criticism suggests that the moderators’ actions may have influenced the tone and outcome of the debate, potentially affecting the candidates’ ability to engage with each other and present their views to the audience.
