A 52-year-old man, Carlos Antunez, was shot in his upper right chest while lying in bed in his home on McNair Street in Nutbush, Memphis, according to police. The shooting occurred on Sunday, and officers responded to the scene after receiving a report of gunfire.

Antunez told police that he was watching TV when he heard the shots and was struck. A neighbor who wished to remain anonymous described the sound of the gunfire as “multiple pops going off at one time,” like a three-round burst. The neighbor said it sounded like an automatic weapon.

When officers arrived, they found Antunez in critical condition and rendered aid. The bullet was still lodged in his body, and he was taken to Regional One hospital. A reporter from WREG visited the home on Monday and counted over 20 bullet holes in the front of the house.

The neighbor who spoke with WREG said that this was not the first time the house had been hit. “This is the second time this house has been shot up,” she said. “A drive-by has been done on that house. This is the second time.” Lourdes Vasquez, who lives nearby, shared a similar experience. “I’ve had a drive-by at my house. A bullet actually went through my restroom,” she said. “It went through my house.”

Police have not released a motive for the shooting, which has left some in the neighborhood feeling concerned about their safety. “I think that’s concerning because at one moment a bullet can just come through your house and you’re not expecting it,” Vasquez said.

A witness told police that the suspects fled the scene in a white SUV, and a security officer later reported that a white Infiniti Q50 with four to five juveniles inside was responsible for the shooting. The car was parked in front of Bald Eagle Drive, and police ran the tags and VIN number, finding that it was stolen. No suspect information is available at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
