The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has announced its intention to sue the state of Louisiana over a new law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in public schools. The law, which cites a quote from James Madison, claims that the Ten Commandments are the foundation of the United States.
However, critics argue that the law amounts to the imposition of Christianity on all students in Louisiana’s public schools, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof. The Center for Inquiry’s director of government affairs, Azhar Majeed, expressed concerns in a letter to Governor Landry that the law is unconstitutional and violates the rights of students from minority religions or no religion at all.
