In a groundbreaking move, two grocery stores in Alabama have installed artificial intelligence-powered vending machines that dispense firearm ammunition, using facial recognition technology to verify customers’ ages and identities.
The machines, located in Fresh Value stores in Tuscaloosa and Pell City, are the brainchild of American Rounds, a company founded by CEO Grant Magers. According to Magers, the vending machines use a secure automated retail system to age-verify customers through a scan of their driver’s license and a 360-degree facial recognition scan.
This innovative approach provides a safe, affordable, and convenient way for customers to purchase ammunition, as demonstrated by the enthusiasm of customers at the Fresh Value locations. However, the Tuscaloosa store’s machine has been temporarily taken down after concerns were raised during a city council meeting.
Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner initially thought the reports were a joke, but was surprised to discover that the machines were real. Meanwhile, Tuscaloosa Police Chief Brent Blankley confirmed that the vending machines are legal and approved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
American Rounds has plans to expand its operations, with machines already located in four other locations in Oklahoma. The company is also set to introduce new machines in Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas.
