Former President Donald Trump may be prohibited from entering countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and others if his felony conviction stands.
Last week, a Manhattan jury found the former president guilty on 34 counts of falsifying records to pay off porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. The former president is expected to appeal his conviction, which could be overturned before the November election. Should he win the election before the conviction is overturned, some countries would have to make exceptions for him to visit on official business. According to The Independent:
Nearly 40 nations – including Canada and the UK – have strict policies regarding individuals with criminal records entering their borders. Without special accommodations, Trump would be held to those same standards. It’s unclear if he would be allowed to visit if he wins the presidential election in November but remains a felon. … The Canadian government’s tourist hub states that any “US Citizen or permanent resident with a felony conviction on their criminal record may be deemed inadmissible to Canada for immigration or even visiting.” … Under UK law, a felon can visit Ireland and Scotland with certain restrictions and requirements. However, Britain can deny access to convicted felons.
Other countries, such as Israel and Australia, have laws about felons entering their nations, which might be subject to interpretation if Trump wins the election this November.
The significant question now is whether the conviction will shift momentum away from Trump in favor of Biden as the November 5 election approaches. Accurate polling on the matter will take at least a week, but establishment Republican Karl Rove, a known critic of Trump, suggested on Fox News that a guilty verdict might cost Trump key swing voters in states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.
“If he is found guilty, let’s not underestimate that there is a problem,” said Karl Rove.
Nonetheless, the former president remains popular with his fervent supporter base, raising $53 million in campaign donations just 24 hours after the conviction.
