A significant number of House Republicans, along with Democrats, voted to table Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s motion to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday. Only 10 Republicans joined Greene in her efforts to remove the speaker.
Out of the 359 House members who voted to table the motion, 43 opposed it. Eleven Republicans and 32 Democrats voted against tabling the motion, which had been looming over Johnson since Greene introduced it in March.
Following the defeat, Greene pointed out that her move to oust Johnson gained more GOP support than the successful attempt to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year, where just eight Republicans supported the motion. The key difference was that no Democrats voted to save McCarthy, while most backed Johnson this time.
Greene’s motion was met with boos from her own party during the House vote series. Despite detailing her grievances against Johnson in a lengthy speech on the House floor, she faced criticism from members of the Main Street Caucus who accused her of throwing a “tantrum.”
