US President Joe Biden has condemned the recent antisemitic mob that targeted the Adas Torah synagogue in the Jewish neighborhood of Pico-Robertson, Los Angeles. On Sunday, dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters blocked the entrance to the synagogue, preventing Jewish members of the community from entering an Israeli real estate event.
Biden said he was “appalled by the scenes” outside the synagogue and stated that intimidating Jewish congregants is “dangerous, unconscionable, antisemitic, and un-American.” He emphasized that Americans have a right to peaceful protest, but blocking access to a house of worship and engaging in violence is never acceptable.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation from lawmakers, with several issuing statements labeling the actions of pro-Palestinian protesters as antisemitic. Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) described the blockade as “plain antisemitism” and stated that it has no place in California.
Los Angeles Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky (D) also condemned the violence, calling it “deeply concerning” and stating that it was unacceptable to see such an incident occur in the heart of the Jewish community.
Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also issued statements on the incident, expressing their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all communities.
The LAPD responded to the situation by deploying officers in riot gear to restore order and prevent further violence.
