The U.S. State Department has issued a “worldwide” alert to Americans abroad, warning of the “increased potential” for terrorist attacks targeting LGBT events.
The memo notably highlighted LGBT targets, omitting mention of potential antisemitic attacks despite the ongoing pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas rallies in Europe and other regions.
“Due to the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution,” the memo states.
The State Department is aware of the heightened risk of violence against LGBTQI+ individuals and events and advises U.S. citizens abroad to be extra vigilant, particularly in tourist hotspots, “including Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.”
The Biden administration has maintained a consistent focus on LGBT issues since taking office in 2021.
“We’ve seen an increase in violence directed at LGBTQI people globally,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in January 2021, referencing the Trump administration era.
“The United States must stand up for and defend the rights of LGBTQI people, a commitment this department will adopt promptly. Raising the pride flag is one way to unequivocally show LGBTQ solidarity,” he stated.
In February 2021, Blinken noted that President Biden had signed a Presidential Memorandum directing all U.S. government departments and agencies abroad to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign aid support the human rights of LGBTQI+ people worldwide.
“The Biden-Harris administration aims to lead by example and pursue a policy to end violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or sex characteristics,” the memo affirmed.
Under President Biden’s leadership, the United States is committed to working with supportive governments and enhancing civil society advocacy to fully endorse and advance LGBTQI+ human rights.
As noted by Truth Voices, during the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in June 2021, the Biden administration prioritized the LGBT agenda in foreign policy, flying the rainbow flag above the U.S. Embassy in Kabul for Pride Month.
“The month of June is recognized as LGBTI Pride Month,” the embassy tweeted. “The United States respects the dignity & equality of LGBTI people & celebrates their contributions to society. We remain committed to supporting the civil rights of minorities, including LGBTI persons.”
Additionally, the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See began flying the LGBT rainbow flag in 2021 to honor Pride Month, despite Catholic teachings opposing homosexual acts and the Vatican’s stance on gender theory.
