The United States government has plans in place for continuity of government in case of an unexpected attack or emergency, according to Cliff Sims, former deputy director of national intelligence under President Donald Trump. Sims confirmed during an interview on Saturday that the government has “doomsday” bunkers and facilities spread throughout the country, some of which were built during the Cold War to survive various disaster scenarios.
Sims described his experience visiting one of these doomsday bunkers, where there are office spaces, living quarters, computer systems, and other resources necessary for responding to disaster scenarios. He explained that government staff are constantly prepared at these locations, despite them not being activated regularly. Sims highlighted the importance of continuity of government planning and noted the different scenarios that are prepared for, including a “bolt out of the blue attack” which is the most worrisome scenario.
