According to a recent CBS News poll, former President Trump has solidified his lead over President Joe Biden, with 52% of registered voters saying they would vote for him if the election were held today. Forty-seven percent of registered voters backed Biden.
The poll surveyed 2,247 registered voters between July 16 and 18. In comparison to a CBS News poll taken on July 3, Trump’s lead had increased by five points.
When questioned about the assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania, 26% of those polled said the incident had made them more likely to consider voting for Trump. Seven percent of voters expressed less support for Trump due to the shooting, while 67% indicated no change in their decision.
A significant proportion of voters, 54%, believed that Trump has promoted unity after the recent attempted assassination. Forty-six percent believed he had emphasized division more than unity.
The poll was conducted shortly after Trump revealed that he had rewritten his speech for the Republican National Convention to prioritize unity. This shift may have contributed to his growing support nationwide.
