This will be Harris’s first debate as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, a role she assumed in July after President Joe Biden stepped down.
Trump took aim at Democrats and the media, accusing them of suddenly changing their tune on Harris, now describing her as a “wonderful” vice president. However, Trump was quick to disagree, saying “she’s not wonderful” and that the upcoming debate would be an opportunity to expose her.
Trump also questioned the legitimacy of Harris’s nomination, claiming she was chosen without any votes and that Biden was overthrown in a “coup.” He further suggested that the United States may not even have a president at the moment, given Biden’s frequent vacations.
Trump reflected on the immense potential of the United States and its military, but emphasized the need for strong leadership. He vowed that, if re-elected, his administration would never succumb to “woke” ideologies and warned that a Harris presidency would have catastrophic consequences for the world.
In the lead-up to the debate, Harris accused Trump of lacking confidence in himself, citing his support for a debate rule that would mute candidates’ microphones when it’s not their turn to speak. Trump’s team has stated that this debate will follow the same rules as a previous CNN debate.
Former Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard, who recently endorsed Trump’s 2024 presidential bid, has advised him to focus on attacking Harris’s character during the debate. Gabbard is also assisting Trump with his debate preparation, although Trump himself has downplayed the amount of time he’s dedicating to it.
