Former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden nationally in both a crowded field and a head-to-head matchup, as Biden grapples with enthusiasm issues, according to an Emerson College poll.

Trump’s advantage exceeds the ± 2.9 percent margin of error.

When undecided voters are encouraged to choose a candidate they lean towards, they favor Biden 59 percent to 41 percent. The overall contest becomes a tie with leaners included, as both Biden and Trump each garner 50 percent.

Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, stated in a release that Biden is leading among voters under 30, while Trump is leading among voters in their 30s.

“However, Biden trails Trump 41% to 45% among voters in their 30s, a demographic he led in 2020,” he noted. “Trump’s support has increased since 2020 among voters in their 50s, leading Biden by 19 points, 57% to 38%.”

The poll also reveals that Biden is facing significant enthusiasm challenges within the Democratic base. While 80 percent of Republican primary voters believe the GOP should nominate Trump, only 68 percent of Democrats believe the party should nominate Biden. Both have been regarded as the presumptive nominees for months.

Approximately a quarter of Democrats (24 percent) prefer a nominee other than Biden, while 8 percent are unsure. In contrast, only 14 percent of Republicans want someone other than Trump as the nominee.

Voters identified the economy as the most pressing issue facing the country. Of the respondents, 38 percent prioritized the economy, followed by immigration and threats to democracy at 17 percent and 13 percent, respectively.
