Former President Donald Trump holds a slight advantage over President Joe Biden on the national stage following his business records trial in Manhattan, as per a CBS News/YouGov poll.

Among independent voters, Biden and Trump are nearly tied; Biden secures 50 percent of this group while Trump has 48 percent. Each candidate receives 94 percent support from their respective party’s base, and 5 percent from the opposing party.

In battleground states, Biden leads by one point among likely voters, standing at 50 percent to Trump’s 49 percent, CBS News reports.

Trump’s supporters show greater enthusiasm than Biden’s. Among Biden’s supporters, 69 percent describe their support as very strong and are “decided” on him as their candidate. Comparatively, 78 percent of Trump supporters express very strong support for him and are “decided” on their vote.

Less than a quarter of Biden’s supporters indicate their support is strong and they “probably won’t” change their minds, with an additional four percent saying they “might still change” their support, and two percent expecting to change their minds eventually.

The enthusiasm gap between the two groups is further highlighted by their motivations. Over half of Biden’s supporters, 54 percent, would vote against Trump, whereas only 27 percent support Biden because they “like” him.

On the other hand, 52 percent of Trump’s backers like him and this is their reason for voting, while 34 percent are motivated by opposition to Biden.

Additionally, 51 percent of respondents see the election as a comparative assessment between the two candidates, 22 percent view it as a judgment on Biden, and 26 percent see it as a judgment on Trump.

The poll surveyed 1,615 registered voters, of which 1,359 are likely voters. The margin of error for likely voters wasn’t provided, but it was ± 3.8 percentage points for registered voters.

Trump’s slim lead aligns with national Emerson College and Morning Consult polls conducted after his conviction. An Emerson College Polling survey from June 4-5 showed Trump with 46 percent support and Biden with 45 percent among registered voters. The Morning Consult poll from May 31-June 2 indicated Trump at 44 percent and Biden at 43 percent.
