Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) predicted Sunday that the moderators of the presidential debates will play “interference” for President Joe Biden, who is seeking reelection this November.
Scott’s comment comes a few days after President Biden and former President Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee for the Republican Party, agreed to a pair of debates, with the first one scheduled for next month. The South Carolina senator claimed that Biden is “so afraid of debating” with Trump.
“He thinks he wants a one-on-one with President Donald Trump because the moderators will run interference for Joe Biden,” Scott said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “It is terrible, the rules that Joe Biden is dictating to have a debate. The good news is President Trump says anywhere, anytime, anyplace, because he knows he can expose the lies of Joe Biden starting with inflation, moving to the border and talking about crime.”
Scott has also encouraged Biden and Trump to each conduct drug tests prior to the start of the debates, saying, “Why not?” when asked about the idea. He pointed to Biden’s performance in his State of the Union speech from earlier this year, claiming there was “something going on” with Biden’s “surreal” performance.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has similarly called for drug tests to be performed on the two candidates, as Biden is “someone with the ability to launch nukes.” Trump himself has suggested his rival conduct a drug test ahead of the debate, joking that Biden would be so “jacked up” before the debates begin.
The first presidential debate is scheduled to take place on June 27 on CNN, a surprisingly early start for the first debate to be held. A second debate between the two candidates will then be held on Sept. 10 on ABC.
Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki predicted that Trump would bail from the debates after agreeing to most of the guidelines. Psaki argued that Trump could say he never agreed to specific guidelines, providing him an exit to opt out of the debates.
