The GOP Speakership now depends on Democrats, as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to remove Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) as House Speaker, causing chaos in the House. Greene’s motion failed, with only 43 votes for removal. The vote showed how the Republican House majority relies on Democrats for governance.

Breaking down the vote, 196 Republicans and 163 Democrats voted against removing Johnson, while 32 Democrats and 11 Republicans voted in favor. The 11 Republicans willing to oust Johnson could pose a threat if Democrats do not intervene.

Last year, a similar situation led to the removal of Speaker Kevin McCarthy with the help of Democrats. Today, Democrats did not vote to remove Johnson due to recent legislative achievements. However, future attempts to remove Johnson could be more successful if Democratic support wanes.

If Republicans lose control of the House in the 2024 general election, there may not be a GOP Speaker. Regardless, Republicans hope their next Speaker will not rely on Democrats to remain in power.
