Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) claimed that former President Donald Trump’s enduring popularity in polls, despite a felony conviction, reflects how “bad” President Joe Biden’s administration is.
Nonetheless, Sununu acknowledged that having a convicted nominee is far from ideal for the GOP, during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday morning.
“I don’t want my nominee to be convicted of anything, of course,” Sununu stated. “I think we had a lot better choices… but he is going to be the nominee of the party. People in America want change. They do. This is how bad Joe Biden is — the fact that regardless of what happens at the courthouse, it looks like Joe Biden is going to lose.”
A recent poll by ABC News following Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts revealed that the number of people who believe Trump should withdraw from the race has remained virtually unchanged since April 2023.
“The polls this morning still have him up 2 points,” Sununu mentioned.
Sununu had previously endorsed former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley over Trump before Haley exited the race in the spring.
Despite Trump’s legal issues, his supporters have continued to back him, partly because they feel President Biden has failed to improve the economy, secure the border, and address crime, according to Sununu.
“He doesn’t deliver results. Inflation is real. The border crisis is real, you know. Public safety and the lack thereof, especially in many major cities, is real,” Sununu said.
With five months remaining until Election Day in November, Sununu expects Trump’s legal troubles to recede as the party conventions and debates take the spotlight.
“We have two more debates. We have the conventions. We have a long way to go to November,” Sununu commented. “This is going to be well into the rearview mirror.”
Trump is the first president in national history to be convicted of a felony.
He was found guilty on all 34 counts of business fraud related to falsifying records in connection with paying off porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.
