Just days before reporting to prison, Steve Bannon remains unwavering in his stance that he did not have to comply with subpoenas from the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling upholding his four-month sentence for contempt of Congress has done little to sway Bannon’s views.

In an interview with NBC News, Bannon defended his decision to defy the subpoenas, citing his lawyer’s assertion that the committee was not “legitimately structured,” rendering the subpoenas invalid. He also highlighted that then-President Donald Trump had exercised executive privilege over their conversations on January 5 and 6, 2021, which the committee sought information about.

The conversations, which Bannon described as “personal and private,” were a key aspect of the committee’s investigation. However, Bannon emphasized that his ultimate goal was not about personal gain, but rather about fighting for a “victory or death of this republic,” a phrase he echoed at a recent Turning Point USA conference in Detroit.

“We only get stronger with this, we’re not going to get weaker,” Bannon said, reiterating his commitment to the populist movement. He is set to report to a prison in Danbury, Connecticut, on Monday.
