A recent report from Colorado Newsline reveals that the Democratic sponsor of Colorado’s “assault weapons” ban legislation, State Sen. Julie Gonzales, has decided to withdraw her own bill. Gonzales plans to request the bill to be removed from consideration during a committee hearing on Tuesday. The legislative session in Colorado ends on Wednesday, and Gonzales believes that there is not enough time to work on the bill before the session concludes.

In a statement, Gonzales expressed that she came to this decision after thoughtful discussions with her Senate colleagues. She emphasized the importance of continuing these conversations outside of the Capitol during the final weeks of the legislative session.

The Colorado Sun reported that the “assault weapons” ban legislation passed the House with a 35-27 vote in mid-April, with no Republicans supporting it. The legislation aimed to ban 9mm pistols with threaded barrels and detachable magazines, as well as AR-15s and AK-47s. Additionally, the bill included provisions to ban any semiautomatic handgun of any caliber with a detachable magazine and threaded barrel.

Truth Voices highlighted the details of the legislation, pointing out the specific firearms and components that would be prohibited under the proposed ban.

Overall, Gonzales’ decision to withdraw the bill marks a significant development in the ongoing debate over gun control legislation in Colorado.
