A historic soccer match took place over the weekend in Spain, marking the first time a team comprised solely of trans men, individuals who identify as male despite being biologically female, competed against a men’s team. The match ended with a 19-0 loss for the trans men’s team, Fenix FC.
However, the outcome of the game was secondary to the significance of the event itself. For the team’s fans and players, the opportunity to participate in their favorite sport on equal terms was a major milestone. Fenix FC was formed three years ago, and its name is inspired by the mythical phoenix, a symbol of rebirth.
The team’s players, who previously competed on women’s teams, expressed their enthusiasm for having a space where they can be themselves. Team captain Luke Inazes, 19, explained that he preferred not to play on a team with biological men, opting instead for a team that understands and shares his identity. “Fenix is more than just a team – it’s a family and a safe space where we can express ourselves freely,” Inazes said.
