Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) has introduced a new bill to prevent the District of Columbia from granting voting rights to foreign nationals, including illegal aliens. In 2022, Democrats on the D.C. Council approved a plan allowing foreign nationals, including illegal aliens, to vote in local elections after residing in the district for 30 days. Marshall’s new bill, the Demanding Citizenship in D.C. Elections Act, aims to overturn this decision and require all voters in the district to be American citizens.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) is cosponsoring the legislation in the Senate, while Rep. William Timmons (R-SC) is sponsoring it in the House. Last year, the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) represented seven D.C. residents in a lawsuit to stop foreign nationals from voting in local elections, but the case was dismissed by a federal judge earlier this year.
Marshall criticized President Joe Biden for what he sees as an attempt to turn illegal aliens into Democratic voters. He emphasized the importance of protecting democracy and urged the public to push back against the administration’s actions. Marshall believes that while his bill is a positive first step, more action is needed to safeguard American democracy.
