A bipartisan bill targeting antisemitism, which passed overwhelmingly in the House, is facing delays in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has not committed to bringing the bill up for a vote, citing challenges from both parties in fast-tracking the legislation. The Senate’s focus this week is on passing a federal aviation bill, causing further delays for the antisemitism bill.

The bill aims to define and expand antisemitism for the Department of Education to enforce anti-discrimination laws more effectively. However, it has sparked objections from both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate over concerns regarding free speech and the potential labeling of criticism of Israel as antisemitic.

Recent anti-Israel protests on college campuses, although no longer making headlines due to law enforcement crackdowns, have reduced the urgency for the Senate to act swiftly on the bill. Meanwhile, Republicans have criticized the administration and President Joe Biden for allegedly withholding support for Israel during a new conflict in southern Gaza.

In a speech honoring Holocaust remembrance, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the safety of the Jewish people and Israel’s security. However, McConnell highlighted concerns over political pressure influencing decisions on Israel, accusing the administration of giving in to anti-Israel sentiments within the Democratic Party and on college campuses.
