The Russian military district responsible for occupying eastern Ukraine has announced plans to conduct drills with tactical nuclear weapons in response to what it perceives as inflammatory statements from Western officials. Moscow claims that these drills are a response to Western provocations and will involve the practice of employing non-strategic nuclear weapons, also known as tactical weapons, which are designed for battlefield use.

The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the exercise aims to maintain the preparedness of troops and equipment to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Russia in response to threats from Western officials. This exercise is seen as a retaliatory measure against what Russia considers inflammatory statements and threats from the West.

While Russia’s nuclear forces have conducted exercises in the past, this is the first time such drills have been announced in advance, suggesting an intent to intimidate. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov specifically blamed members of the US Congress, French and British administrations, as well as individuals from Baltic States and Poland for the provocative statements that led to this nuclear provocation.

This development comes amid escalating tensions in the region, with leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirming their commitment to supporting Ukraine, including the possibility of deploying troops. This has raised concerns in Western capitals, with some accusing Macron of risking escalating the conflict with Russia. In response, Russian officials have issued warnings about the consequences of NATO nations sending troops to Ukraine, describing it as a potential global catastrophe.

Nuclear threats from Russia have become more frequent during the Ukraine conflict, with Moscow issuing warnings of retaliation against even minor provocations. The situation remains tense as both sides engage in military drills and rhetoric that raises concerns about the potential for further escalation.
