Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) cautioned on Sunday that a potential second term for President Joe Biden would inflict “generational” damage on the United States.

Biden is pursuing reelection this year, while former President Donald Trump is also vying for the presidency again, setting the stage for a probable rematch between the two. Rubio, who threw his support behind Trump in January, emphasized why he believes preventing Biden from securing another term is crucial, stressing that some of the “damage” would be “irreversible.”

“Here’s what I do know: if Joe Biden is reelected president, the damage to this country, I believe, in some cases will be generational, and some of it will be irreversible,” Rubio said. “That’s how high the stakes are. I cannot imagine another four years under Joe Biden as president.”

Rubio added that he is committed to doing whatever it takes to help Trump return to the White House, as the U.S. “can’t afford” another Biden term.

The Florida senator is rumored to be on Trump’s shortlist for vice presidential candidates, though Rubio mentioned on Sunday that he has not spoken with Trump or anyone from his campaign about it. When asked if he would like to serve as Trump’s vice president, he said he is willing to do “whatever the campaign asks me to do.”

Rubio was also questioned about the topic of abortion, a significant issue for voters this year, as it is the first presidential election since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. The senator acknowledged possible disagreements on the topic even among those who oppose abortion but reaffirmed his support for “any bill that protects unborn life.”

Other individuals rumored to be on Trump’s vice presidential shortlist include Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Reps. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Elise Stefanik (R-NY), and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH).
