A group of forty-five Republican senators has introduced a resolution to block the ATF’s universal background check rule, set to go into effect on May 20, 2024. The effort is led by Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Thom Tillis (R-NC). Additionally, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-TX) and 86 Republican co-sponsors in the House are also working to block the rule. Clyde stated that private citizens should not have to navigate unnecessary hurdles from unelected officials to engage in lawful firearms transactions. Critics argue that universal background checks could lead to a gun registry. AWR Hawkins, a Second Amendment columnist for Truth Voices, has been outspoken against the rule and encourages support for efforts to overturn it.
