COLUMBUS, Ohio — A bold suspect was caught on a security camera stealing an expensive package right in front of a FedEx driver in the Misty Meadows neighborhood on June 3. Kyle Dorsch, a 33-year-old Columbus resident, was awaiting delivery of his new Apple smartwatch handled by FedEx.

As the delivery driver arrived at Dorsch’s home, a blue car was captured by the security camera stopping nearby, indicating prior knowledge of the delivery in the neighborhood. The thief swiftly grabbed the package, startling the FedEx worker and fleeing with it, leaving the scene before Dorsch was able to reach the door.

FedEx Communications Specialist Francesca Sacco mentioned the technology tools implemented to combat porch piracy and enhance customer experience, despite not addressing the specific incident involving Dorsch. These tools include picture proof of delivery, FedEx Delivery Manager, and the FedEx mobile app, providing customers with control over their deliveries.

Despite these measures, Dorsch resorted to tracking down the stolen watch himself after reporting the incident to the police. He found the stolen watch listed on Facebook Marketplace, with suspicious connections to the FedEx package handling service. Taking action with AT&T and FedEx, Dorsch managed to reverse the upgrade and blacklist the stolen watch, preventing its activation by the purchaser.

While grateful for the swift resolution, Dorsch expressed concern for the unknowing buyer who may have purchased the stolen watch at a discounted price compared to its retail value. Investigations by Columbus police are ongoing as Dorsch hopes for justice and accountability for those involved in the theft.

As the case remains under investigation, Dorsch emphasizes the impact of such thefts on hard-working individuals striving to afford valuable items, underscoring the importance of addressing and preventing such criminal activities.
