Presidential candidate Donald Trump is outperforming incumbent President Joe Biden in polls in two states where abortion protections are a significant issue.

A recent CBS News/YouGov poll surveyed about 1,510 Arizonans, revealing that although abortion ranked as the sixth most critical factor in their voting decisions, 52% indicated support for Trump, with 47% for Biden. Among 1,576 Floridians, abortion was considered the seventh most important factor, with 54% backing Trump and 45% supporting Biden.

Florida currently enforces a law prohibiting abortion after six weeks, except when the mother’s health is endangered. Similarly, Arizona has made abortion illegal even in cases of rape and incest, with exceptions only for immediate life-threatening situations. In response, Biden has focused efforts on sending staff to these states to support the abortion-rights movement.

Economic concerns appeared paramount among respondents. Examining only registered voters’ responses, 47% of Floridians felt their financial situation improved under Trump’s presidency, while 52% felt worse under Biden’s administration. In Arizona, 30% of registered voters believed Trump is highly attentive to the economic situation, compared to 20% who felt the same about Biden.

This coincides with head-to-head polling from the New York Times and Siena College, which shows Trump leading by 7 percentage points in Arizona, identified as a swing state. Additionally, Trump has a 14-point lead in Nevada, 10 points in Georgia, 7 points in Michigan, and 3 points in Pennsylvania.

Trump secured victories in Florida during the last two elections. Biden won Arizona in 2020, whereas Trump carried the state in 2016.

The margin of error for the CBS News/YouGov poll was +/-3.3 points in Arizona and +/-3.1 points in Florida.
