In April 2024, the Chicago Police Department released data showing a decrease in homicides, shootings, thefts, robberies, and carjackings in the city. Homicides are at their lowest levels in at least six years, with 37 recorded in April, a 30 percent drop from the previous year. Overall, homicides are down 12 percent for the year.
Moreover, the clearance rate for homicides has increased to over 76 percent, the highest since 2015. Other improvements reported by the police include an 8 percent decrease in shootings, a nearly 5 percent drop in shooting victims, a 4.5 percent reduction in robberies, and a 1.4 percent decrease in thefts for the year.
Theft of vehicles has decreased by 32 percent from April 2023 and by 27 percent for the year so far. Additionally, there has been a 22 percent decline in carjackings compared to the previous year. Crime on public transportation has decreased by 6 percent, and the number of illegal firearms confiscated has increased by nearly 12 percent.
Unfortunately, the month also saw the loss of officer Luis Huesca, who was killed in the line of duty on April 21. He is one of the 29 officers who have been shot or shot at so far this year.
