Poland’s defense minister announced on Thursday that the country is reinforcing the metal barrier along its border with Belarus to prevent illegal migration. Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that they are repairing and strengthening the barrier, with the highest spending on these efforts in Poland’s history. Additionally, there has been an increased presence of Polish and allied military forces near the border to tighten security, a response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine in 2022.

Kosiniak-Kamysz also voiced support for the construction of defensive bunkers, trenches, and ditches along the borders with Belarus and Russia’s exclave of Kaliningrad, following the lead of the Baltic states. The minister attributed a surge in illegal migration from Belarus in 2022 to orchestrated efforts by Belarus and Russia to destabilize Poland, an ally of Ukraine and the European Union. While the metal barrier has helped reduce illegal crossings, some continue to occur.

The reinforcement of the border is not only aimed at preventing illegal migration but is also viewed as a broader defense measure in light of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. The minister’s remarks align with the ongoing challenges posed by Belarus’ involvement in aiding illegal migration.
