A man arrested in connection with the disappearance and murder of two Kansas mothers revealed in court that he cannot afford an attorney. Paul Grice, 31, was charged with the kidnappings and murders of Veronica Butler, 27, and Jilian Kelley, 39. Tiffany Adams, 54, her boyfriend Tad Cullum, 43, Cora Twombly, 44, and her husband Cole Twombly, 50, were also arrested on the same charges.
Butler and Kelley were travelling to Oklahoma to pick up Butler’s children for a supervised visitation when they went missing. They were later found dead in a rural area of Oklahoma. Probable cause affidavits revealed a custody battle between Butler and Adams involving threats and violence.
Grice admitted to being involved in the planning, killing, and burial of Butler and Kelley. He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and shared his love for his own family. Residents of Guymon, Oklahoma, where Grice lived with his family, were shocked by the news.
The suspects are believed to be part of an anti-government religious group called “God’s Misfits.” The group reportedly met at the Twombly residence weekly. Butler and Kelley were active members of their community and churches. Memorial services have been planned for both women, who were acquaintances. Adams confessed to the killings and there were previous attempts to harm Butler in Oklahoma and Kansas.
